Dear Parents of Our First Year Students:

Stay connected to your student!! This is especially important for parents of first generation college students. I teach several hundred first-semester college students each year and, in my experience, they all have very similar adjustment problems. The lack of a college background or familiarity with the college environment should not preclude you from helping your student navigate the emotional stresses of college. Of course you can’t manage their time, complete their assignments, or intervene in their classes, but you can let them know you’re “there”. Be their personal cheerleader and emotional supporter. Call often and send frequent “care packages”. Just knowing that they have your love and support can make a big difference in how quickly and how well they handle the stresses of being away from home and so many demanding responsibilities. After all, your support of their academic achievements is one of the reasons they have made it to this point. Don’t stop now; keep up the good work!!
