Throughout the country there has been a spate of racially themed parties on college campuses. There's the group of students at the University of Delaware who threw a Cinco de Mayo party during which students dressed in costumes that were derogatory toward Latinos. The "Big Booty Hoes & Ghetto Bros" party at the University of Illinois. In addition to the list of schools are Auburn University, Ole Miss, Clemson, Syracuse. Oklahoma State, Stetson, even our very own UofL.
It's been a growing trend for students to dress in blackface to these parties. Although some hold the belief that it's all in good fun, not only are they feeding into racism, but they also don't know the history of blackface and its use in minstrel shows.

In an attempt to discuss these "racially themed parties" and the history of blackface, the C.O.N.E.C.T. Mentor Program, along with the A&S Office of Diversity and Community Outreach are holding this event to open up discussion about these prevalent issues on our campus and in our society.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We encourage everyone to come out and engage in some intellectual discussion about this issue.
